The true value of Linkedin? Recommendations!

Okay you’re social and you have access to all these different social networks.  And perhaps you’re wondering exactly what is the value of one network versus the other.

In my opinion the value of Linkedin is recommendations.  This is a unique feature of this network.

You have the ability to write a recommendation about a friend, colleague, co-worker, consultant, presenter, etc.  Think about it.  You know how you feel when someone writes something complementary about you. So why not take the fifteen to twenty minutes each week it might take to write a recommendation about someone.  It will make you feel good, it helps out the individual in that they now have a bank of recommendations for future job references, and they might in turn do the same favor for you.

It really is a “pay it forward” kind of action!

Flash – IMAP crash issue with 8.5.2 FP3

If you are considering upgrading to 8.5.2 FP3, run in a Windows server environment and run IMAP – you should contact IBM Support before doing so.  A colleague has found an issue with the build this morning — the updated nimap.exe was not included in the Fixpack.   A flash supposedly has been released to make customers aware of this.  I’ll update this post as soon as I can confirm of the flash status.

UPDATE:  SPR # TLAM8JZNMN in which Domino Fix Pack 3 did not include the latest imap.exe.  This SPR will be addressed in 8.5.2FP3IF1

Chasing the Cloud, Part 2 – New Article in THE VIEW

My second article in the series of three: “Chasing the Cloud: Part 2: Plan and Prepare for Moving your Domino Environment to the Cloud” has just been published online in THE VIEW.  Part 1 of the series can be found here:  “Chasing the Cloud Part 1:  What Domino Administrators and Managers Need to Know.” This site does require a subscription.  If you’re new to THE VIEW – this is one of the leading resources for technical content for all IBM/Lotus products.

And sometimes a picture is…updated! Thanks Sametime Support!

If you saw my previous post…you’re recall that the technote had only one word: Answer.  Thanks to Sametime Support it has been updated!

And sometmes…a picture is worth one word.

A few quick notes on Google+

If you haven’t at least looked at it you should.  Why? Because we need to change scenery occasionally.

Google+ is not Facebook, it’s not Twitter.  It’s perhaps a little in between.  But it’s also something that’s still evolving.  Techies are busy trying to predict what’s going to happen next.

But if you do take a look, here are a few suggestions to make your visit a little more enjoyable.

(1)    Use Chrome as your browser.  Why? Because there are Chrome extensions that are being developed daily to add functionality.  A couple that I’ve found:

(2)    Look around and read about how to manage your Circles before trying to do so yourself.  Here’s a good starting point.

(3)    Take a look at your security settings.  If you don’t want to share your Picasa pics with everyone on Chrome – you need to take a look at this setting.

Other than that, dive in, post comments, post feedback to Google.  Google+ is still a field trial. From comments being posted the engineers seem to be receptive to suggestions and they definitely want to hear about any crashes/issues you may experience.

iNotes Hotfix Magic….Finally?

If you’ve been managing Domino unix-based servers, you know what a cumbersome process it is to install iNotes hotfixes.  They’ve always been packaged as a group of separate files which must be uploaded individually, the ownership and properties of the files must each be changed manually, etc., etc.,  If you have a number of servers to manage this adds lots of extra steps to your maintenance process.

We just received a “normal” hotfix package which included fixes for some other server issues, but also received files for iNotes to allow 8.5.1 to provide support for Firefox 4 (also good news!).

As we would normally install the hotfix package first, we proceded to do that.  And guess what!  The iNotes files were packaged in the automatic installer:

Note – dwa85.cab, forms85.nsf, dwa85.cab, dwa85res_en.dll are files that are usually upload manually when applying an iNotes hotfix.  We confirmed that all files had the correct owership and properties. They were even installed across multiple partitions!

We’re hoping this is the future of iNotes hotfixes for unix-based servers at least!  This is a huge time saver!!  Thanks IBM Support!
